Assistant Manager - Legal

Your role in HEINEKEN

As an Assistant Manager – Legal, you will provide legal support to business functions, particularly on commercial matters, debt recovery, compliance and legal risk management, while reducing reliance on external counsel.

You will provide timely and practical legal advice to the Company, support the management of legal and compliance risks, and ensure that the Company’s business transactions, rights and obligations are appropriately protected and documented.

 

In this role, you will also

  • Provide legal support to the Commercial Finance, Sales and Marketing teams, including legal advice on commercial litigation, liability and other disputes.
  • Provide legal advice on the best course of action to ensure maximum recovery of outstanding debts and minimise unfavourable outcomes arising from non-payment by customers or dealers.
  • Conduct legal and compliance training or briefings for relevant employees to ensure they understand their obligations within their respective areas of responsibility.
  • Develop appropriate legal guidelines, procedures and compliance frameworks, including contract management guidelines to support the negotiation of contracts and agreements by the commercial team.
  • Provide accurate and timely legal advisory services to support the Company in achieving its strategic and operational objectives while meeting its legal obligations and managing compliance risks.
  • Provide legal advice on sales and/or purchases made by the Company and advise the business on relevant legislative and judicial developments that may impact the Company and its operations.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate compliance framework to ensure the Company conducts its business with integrity and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ensure appropriate systems, procedures and programmes are in place to communicate, embed, enforce and monitor legal and compliance policies across the Company.
  • Monitor the Company’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies, and support regular reporting of compliance matters to the Board and Management.
  • Collaborate with the Company’s panel of legal advisors to provide guidance to the business on current and new applicable laws and regulations.
  • Identify legal exposures and risks and ensure appropriate measures are taken to mitigate, reduce or avoid such risks, including providing recommendations to management.
  • Ensure appropriate steps are taken to protect the Company’s assets, rights and business opportunities and that business transactions, rights and obligations are adequately documented.
  • Support the communication of the Company’s Code of Business Conduct to relevant parties to minimise compliance risks and prevent unfavourable outcomes.
  • Monitor trademark matters under the Company’s portfolio, including potential infringement of the Company’s trademarks in the local market.
  • Report and support investigations into suspected violations of the Company’s trademarks, copyrights and royalties.
  • Keep the Corporate Relations & Legal Director updated and prepare relevant reports on legal matters and activities undertaken.

 

Key Requirements

  • Degree in Law and called to the Malaysian Bar.
  • Minimum 6 years of post-qualification experience, with experience handling general commercial matters. A background in litigation is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with adequate proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia.
  • Strong attention to detail with good analytical, planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Good relationship-building and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Mature, independent and resourceful, with the ability to multitask and meet important deadlines.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced and changing work environment.
  • Ability to analyse issues and recommend business improvements.
  • Strong organisational, planning, administrative and time-management skills.
  • Good understanding of business principles with a strong sense of reliability and professional integrity.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical skills with a collaborative, customer-focused and continuous improvement mindset.
